Chapter 11

My time in Georgetown, Kentucky seemed like a lifetime ago. The small city outside of Lexington was the location of my first meeting with FBI Special Agent Travis Blaine Riley. While working on a case that I could only describe as life-changing, I had to rely on him, and his now-deceased partner, to catch the criminal – and to stay alive! There are only a few people that I would trust with my life… agent Riley was one of them. My trust in him was being severely tested based on what I had witnessed at that window. It was dark outside, and I just wanted to get my office assistant back. It was time to find out what was going on inside that house and what side Riley was on – my side or the enemy’s side.

There was a conversation going on in the living room. I could not see who was talking but it was a male voice to the left of Riley. His voice sounded muffled, as if the room may have been more insulated than a normal home. I bent down and picked up some of the mud that was below the window. I quietly rubbed it in my hands then applied it underneath my eyes and on my cheeks. I didn’t want the light from the window to reflect off my face and expose my position. The voice had not gotten any clearer, so I decided to take another look through the window.

Ant was trying NOT to look at me and focus his eyes on the ceiling. Riley was now holding his pistol upward and had his head turned toward the direction of the voice. He was listening intently to what I could only guess was the person in charge of the apprehension. Riley shook his head several times, indicating that he agreed with the person. I took a second to unsecure my weapon… and then I thought better of using it. There was a stone on the ground about two feet away, I grabbed it and threw it diagonally to my right. It hit the corner of the house. There was an immediate response inside of the room where Ant was being held. Several sets of footsteps went quickly to that area of the house. When I looked into the window again, Riley was gone as well as the man and the woman that were initially in the room. Ant was alone, and this was my chance to get to him.

I used my fingers to emphatically point down. He understood that I wanted him to throw himself towards the floor and in doing so I would come through the window. As soon as I saw Ant falling, I covered my right arm with my sleeve and jumped through the glass of the window. I only had a few seconds to get into the room, pull my pistol, and be prepared to fire at any threat. My knees hit the hardwood flooring of the room and I felt immediate pain.
